Welcome to the Reflections on the River website.

What's New

What is the Reflections on the River project?

A two year long campus and community       emphasis on the New River.  The project was inspired partly by the New River's nomination as an American Heritage River and will be Radford University's (RU) contribution to efforts to increase awareness of the river historically, culturally, and environmentally.

The New River is one of the 14 heritage rivers in the country. While the main emphasis of the project will be on the New River and its watershed, there will also be information on comparisons with rivers across the nation and throughout the world.  By examining the ways in which different cultures throughout the world relate to their rivers our own community can reflect on its distinctive relationship with our local river.  There will be many different approaches to the theme of the river that will allow access to people from different disciplines.

The goal of this project is for RU faculty and students to learn more about the river over the next two years.  This project will end during the 2002-2003 academic year in a celebration entitled the "Year of the River."  During that year all disciplines at RU will be invited to participate in teaching students about the river.  A video documentary of the Reflections on the River project is planned.

How did the Reflections on the River project get started?

During the summer of 2000 the Selu Environmental Arts Committee and the RU Art Museum organized four canoe trips down the Little River, part of the New River watershed, from Snowville, VA to the Selu Conservancy.  The purpose of these three-hour trips to provide the participants with direct contact to the river.
